Reports to: Production Manager

Purpose: The main purpose of this position is for the job holder to act as the final technical checkpoint for all book production files “preflight” before they go to mass production to prevent costly errors and delays in schedules. The holder of this position will also be responsible for vetting and coaching new design and composition vendors, as well as continuously monitor the compliance of the recurring vendors. The position will be responsible for technically vetting all materials submitted by authors for inclusion in their publications. The job holder will also carry out the layout and design of the pages and covers of select publications.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Preflight Responsibilities

o Act as the last safety net for all production files going to mass production through proper pre-flighting

o Check the final format of the documents, placement of crop and registration marks, and bleeds of images for proper presentation

o Create measurement guides based on vendor supplied templates

o Review that all fonts are valid and functional, compatible with printers’ platforms, and displaying properly, with attention to special fonts

o Review all images are of the required resolution, color profiles and free of moiré and display defects, and that superimposed text on images on diagrams and maps is legible

o Responsible for managing the file uploads and ongoing maintenance for a number of used platforms that AUC Press uses for international distribution as well as dissemination of digital material for review and publicity

o Responsible for uploading all Core source file content for the various electronic editions for sale eBooks and various electronic editions. Core source the main platform that feeds information to the North America distributor, and parties, including Amazon

o Responsible for technically adjusting the production files to be compatible with LSI in terms of technical requirements of format and resolution

o Coordinate on the Vitrium publicity purposes, the platform through which protected files are disseminated

o Manage all file uploads including all covers of all editions into BiblioLive to be available internally, as well as feed out to data partners, including core source

o Responsible for uploading all audio and video material to the AUC Press Arabic learning resources site

o Perform the page composition of a number of selected titles, especially for the Arabic learning program. Design new templates when needed to fit content of new classes of publications

o Perform the page composition and cover design of select titles and all re-issues titles being republished in new formats. Create digital blades and dynamic flip-view of catalogs, excerpts as needed

o Adjust all images photographs, diagrams, charts and graphs, calligraphy, and maps, whether black and white or full color profiles, paper type, or printer equipment

o Review image resolution dots per inch and suitability for production

o Review image aesthetic condition

o Perform adjustments needed to color balance, contrast, noise reduction and retouching

o Convert to suited color profile

o Manage process with image correction vendors if applicable. Electronic publishing

o Prepare all web PDF formats for eBooks, in compliance with conversion requirements

o Manage process with ePub conversion firms

o Upload both formats as digital assets to ore source to be available for sale

o Responsible for production files for all AUC Press publications, digital and electronic, are a valuable asset that needs to be securely stored in an organized and easily accessible fashion for future reprints and re-use

o Establish all final and complete versions of production files for all print and electronic publications are stored in designated location network storage and cloud servers

o Retrieve final production files from printers’ post press, to ensure all ozalids revisions are captured in archived version of production files

o Retrieve files as needed for future needs

  • Author guides and vetting submissions

o Cooperate with acquisition editors to ascertain that materials submitted by authors in the early process confirm to technical requirements, and point out replacements needed, or budgets to be secured to address technical issues found. Submitted material includes the manuscript, additional visual, audio and/ or video material

o Update AUC Press author guide as needed to continue to be a comprehensive technical guide for submissions

  • Monitor compliance to AUC Press Publications visual standards

o Ensure that AUC Press Publications visual standards are followed by all vendors

o Coach new services providers and staff members on visual standards and templates

  • Perform other related duties as requested by direct supervisor


Minimum Education Requirement : 

  •  BA degree in applied arts/ printing/ graphic design or relevant established experience
  • English and Arabic Language proficiency

Experience :

  • Minimum of seven years of experience in a similar position in the industry

Skills :

  • English and Arabic Language proficiency
  • Proficient use of (Adobe InDesign, Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop, QuarkXPress, Microsoft office [Word, Excel, PowerPoint], Enfocus PitStop.
  • Good knowledge of database-driven design is a plus
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workflow
  • Detail-oriented and maintain high level of data management
  • Ability to research and self-educate to maintain advanced working knowledge of all relevant design tools
  • Time management skills and the ability to multi-task accurately and maintain a positive attitude under tight deadlines
  • Trouble shooting skills
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills
