Work tasks

Luke invites applications for a postdoc position in a multidisciplinary research group studying ecosystem processes and the resilience of forests. The group consists of ecologists, foresters, physicists and modelers, and interacts with statisticians, economists, and a broad array of other experts at Luke and elsewhere. The postdoc will have an opportunity to interact with several other postdocs and early career scientists.

The postdoc will focus on the analyses of the vulnerability and resilience of European forests to disturbances. The main tasks are to compile and analyze large forest inventory data and other geographic materials in order to quantify the disturbance regimes, their drivers and related future scenarios, and to evaluate the diversity-vulnerability-resilience hypotheses. The postdoc will participate in implementing the results of the analyses into process-models describing forest growth and carbon balances, and further into economic analyses. The postdoc will mainly work within the European BIODIVERSA project FUNPOTENTIAL, which focuses on analyzing how diversity impacts the disturbance vulnerability and resiliency of forests and forest-based socio-ecological systems.

The vacancy is initially for 2 years with a possibility of 1 year continuation (2+1).

We are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher with background in ecology, forestry, geography, applied statistics, or a related discipline. Methodological skills in statistical data analysis, GIS/spatial analyses, and programming (e.g., R, python) are essential. Knowledge of natural disturbances, functional traits, diversity, model development and parameterization, and an interest in interdisciplinary research with economists are advantages. The candidate should have the ability to work independently and as a part of multidisciplinary and international research group. A demonstrated ability to communicate in English and to publish in international scientific journals is required.
