Our Intercultural Community offers possibilities to share experiences and competence, and supports the development of internationality in Luke.

Work tasks

The research area of the research professor in forest and peatland ecosystem modelling involves understanding of ecosystem processes and capacity to develop dynamic process-based models that are applicable for analyses on ecosystem responses to changes in management and environmental conditions. Model approaches should accommodate to further integration of environmental and socio-economic impact assessment.

The work should contribute to studies on ecosystem productivity and resilience with advances in integration of the above and belowground ecosystem processes (incl. microbiome drivers of greenhouse gas fluxes), biogeochemistry and hydrology. Developed models should contribute e.g. to precision forestry, sustainable forest and peatland management, supporting ecosystem service production and biodiversity, greenhouse gas inventory, forest monitoring, and economic analyses (incl. life cycle assessment) in forestry and facilitate informed strategy choices and decision-making in land-use planning and policy.

The research professor should build advanced opensource models that especially address boreal soil processes including greenhouse gas fluxes of peat soils and integrate the empirical open access data sources together with Lukes long-term monitoring data to ecosystem process modelling piggybacking on existing models and model co-development in Luke.

The person nominated in the position is expected to actively develop the strategic orientation of ambitious research projects, lead the development of large-scale international project entities, develop and scientifically lead a strong research group in the field of research at Luke, secure long-term broad-based funding, interact with relevant national and international stakeholders and promote the application and dissemination of research results.

We appreciate state-of-the art professional programming skills, capacity for spatial data integration to process understanding and advanced knowledge e.g. on Bayesian calibration, data assimilation, inversion mathematics, and system analysis.

The position requires excellent problem-solving, communication and international academic leadership skills and proved capacity to build multidisciplinary research consortium that are competent in raising international research funding.
