  • Applications are invited for a Research Support Officer to work on the BIOBLU project, which is funded by the Interreg V-A Italia-Malta Programme of 2020. The successful candidates may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Communications & Computer Engineering within the Faculty of Information & Communication Technology.
  • Applicants must be in possession of a first degree or a Master’s degree in ICT, Electrical Engineering or any other related area, and have experience in image processing, computer vision and machine learning. Experience working with UAV and/or satellite imagery will be considered an asset. The successful candidates must have a command of the English language in both oral and written form and must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • The selected candidate must be living in Malta for the period of employment.
  • The post is for a period until 31st October 2022 and carries an initial remuneration of €20,800 per annum or €10 per hour for those in possession of a first degree, or €24,960 per annum or €12 per hour for those in possession of a Master’s degree.

  • Through BIOBLU, the Sicilian and Maltese universities, together with the support of the managing authorities of two bays in the territory, intend to give their innovative contribution towards mitigating the plastic and microplastic debris which litter our seas and beaches. Deep learning will be used to detect and localize litter remotely, and will enable automatic litter collection using a robot. The litter will then be compacted and disposed of into separated waste bins at the perimeter of the area. Further information may be obtained by contacting Dr Ing.   • The reporting, duties and responsibilities of the appointee will include:
  • Develop a labelled dataset of UAV images of the coastline containing plastics;
  • Develop a deep learning classifier to distinguish and identify plastics from other objects present in the image;
  • Participate in dissemination and outreach activities as part of the project team;
  • Contribute to the writing of scientific papers;
  • Participate in scientific conferences;
  • Attend team or project meetings as required; and
  • Assist in other duties as directed by the Principal Investigator of the project.
  • The selected candidate will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.
  • The selection procedure will involve:
  • Scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed as supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
  • Shortlisting; and
  • An interview and / or extended interview.
