SBS Insurance Services Ltd and The School of Computing and Digital Technology at Birmingham City University (BCU) are looking to appoint a high calibre technical developer with specialist expertise in computer vision, convolutional neural networks, image processing and data analysis. The role will be based SBS Insurance Services Ltd. who specialise in applying innovative technologies to insurance claim handling for their clients. The role will also have access to staff and facilities of the BCU Digital Media Technology Lab (DMT Lab) a world leading research lab in image and audio technology. This role presents a unique and exciting opportunity to collaborate both with industry and leading academics to apply knowledge and technical innovation to create new AI solutions to increase business efficiency.

The Role

Within the role you will be responsible for leading the iterative development and evaluation of a novel end to end system which automates claims handling for SBS. This design and development will involve you working collaboratively with the team at SBS to understand their key requirements and needs, alongside  DMT Lab academics to explore new tools, platforms and research theory. The final system will be capable of performing classification of remote client information based on submitted image data and via interfacing with current SBS processes, deliver automation of their claims. The platform will also need to be evaluated closely with the SBS claim handling team, to explore and understand the effectiveness of it and subsequently optimised to provide a valuable end user quality of experience and improved efficiency for the SBS business.

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will have excellent technical development and social interaction skills and should be willing to work as part of a tightly knit, innovative group of highly motivated individuals both at SBS and the DMT Lab. The candidate must also be adept at applying their knowledge to commercial projects, driving value and making an impact where possible, with an ability to solve problems and create innovative solutions.

Essential Skills

  • Hold a Master’s degree (PhD desirable) or equivalent professional experience in applied Computer Science, Engineering, Machine Learning, Digital Media Technology, IT, or other related discipline.
  • Experience of working with and developing computer vision systems, image processing applications and web services.
  • Strong programming background in relevant languages (Python) and software tools (Tensorflow, PyTorch, Docker, HTTP requests, web APIs).
  • Good knowledge of image processing, data structures, optimisation, and evaluation methods
  • Excellent communication, time management, and problem solving skills – as well as confidence in working closely with relevant stakeholders within SBS and DMT Lab. 

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in designing convolutional neural networks, their use in image classification and use of relevant evaluation methods
  • Experience in designing object oriented programming solutions
  • Proven experience designing and implementing REST APIs and container architectures (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Proven experience with data structures, relevant libraries (NumPy, Pandas) and designing data pre-processing pipelines
  • Proven experience in image processing and use of relevant libraries (e.g. OpenCV PIL)
  • Background in applied artificial intelligence
  • Wider commercial understanding and awareness.

The successful graduate will be employed by the University and will be based at SBS Insurance Services Limited, Beecroft Court, Beecroft Road, Cannock where they will lead on the technical development of the project and be supported by academics from BCU’s DMT Lab.
