Postdoctoral Research Assistant - Data Scientist

Updated: 17 days ago
Location: Oxford, ENGLAND
Deadline: 04 Jun 2021

We are seeking a post-doc for a computational data scientist role. This role is a part of, an exciting new Wellcome Trust-funded collaborative project to understand how the Leishmania parasite is such an effective pathogen. This post is in the Peter Medawar Building for Pathogen Research, University of Oxford, but the project is a collaboration with three other UK research groups and has a dedicated team of 5 research assistants and postdocs. The LeishGEM project will use two genome-wide screens in the Leishmania parasite as a foundation. Working with the other team members carrying out cutting-edge molecular biology this will define the most important parasite pathways for pathogenicity.

As the team’s dedicated data scientist, you will be responsible to managing and analysing the primary dataset of 10+ quantitative fitness measurements of 10,000 deletion mutants and microscope images of millions of cells showing protein localisation. This will involve adapting existing and developing new data handling pipelines and analyses, and incorporating additional genomic, phylogenetic, bioinformatic resources. You will support the team through data visualisation and developing biological hypotheses which can be tested. The scope and value of these data will also allow individual project development.

We are seeking applicants with undergraduate and graduate degrees in relevant subjects (including computer sciences, statistics and biological sciences) and have research experience working with large datasets involving cell biology systems, preferably involving previous work in collaboration with wet-bench biologists.

The post is full time and fixed-term for up to 4.5 years (54 months).

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12:00 midday on 4 June 2021 will be considered.
