Prof Lindgren’s group is one of the world leaders in using human genomics to elucidate the causes of obesity, cardio-metabolic and reproductive diseases with a particular focus on identifying variants associated with fat distribution, and related traits. Starting with the seminal GWAS performed by the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium in 2007, we have established and played leading roles in the major global consortia in this area, including GiANT (Obesity and fat distribution GWAS), DIAGRAM (T2D GWAS in Europeans), MAGIC (GWAS for continuous glycemic traits), EGG (genetics of birth weight), GoT2D (whole genome sequencing in T2D), T2DGENES (exome sequencing in T2D), and PCOS consortia. We continue to be extremely active in efforts to identify additional risk-alleles associated with obesity and related traits, with prominent roles in several ongoing large-scale studies. In each of these high profile, world-leading studies, Oxford either has the major responsibility for analysis (GiANT, PCOS, UKBiobank), or shares that with a number of other groups.
We are now looking for a highly motivated and capable person to join our group as a Senior Statistical Geneticist. Major activities will relate to the various discovery efforts described above (which make use of a combination of GWAS, imputation, and direct whole exome or genome sequencing). These studies are critically dependent on the organisation of harmonised analysis and QC of the component studies followed by coordinated joint analysis of the data, and require meticulous attention to detail, intimate knowledge of the data, and careful diplomatic skills. There is a need to develop, evaluate and implement novel statistical and computational approaches, and to interface with researchers with analogous and complementary data sets. Success in turning those discoveries into biological insights and translational advances are central to the group’s profile, and you will need to be comfortable interacting with biologists and clinicians to ensure that the transfer of knowledge is efficient and effective.
You will hold a relevant PhD/DPhil with post-qualification research experience, and extensive demonstrable experience in generation and/or analysis of high-throughput genetic and genomic data; genome-scale association analyses in GWAS and/or sequence data; bioinformatics including manipulation and integration of large genetic and genomic data sets; and analysis within large international consortia. You will have high-level expertise in computational genetics including familiarity with principal programming and scripting languages (e.g. R), experience of leading distributed analyses of complex genetic data and familiarity with the major principles of complex trait genetics, including heritability estimation and polygenic risk prediction, and issues of population stratification. A strong publication record, excellent communication and project management skills, and experience supervising teams of junior research staff will also be essential for the role.
This position is full time and fixed-term for two years in the first instance. Applications for flexible working arrangements are welcomed and will be considered in line with business needs.
