Job Description

A full-time, permanent position is available starting May 2021 as the Associate Division Chief for the Communication Systems and Spectrum Division (CSSD) of the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) in the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI).  CSSD currently has approximately 40 full time researchers and staff operating on about $15M of sponsored research per year.  The main focus of CSSD is researching and developing world-class communication platforms and solutions for use in Tactical environments and real-time visualization software to facilitate Mission Planning.

The ICL lab has programs across a wide range of information science research, including communications, sensing, networks, advanced computing, trusted information exchange, enterprise modernization, software applications, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and health systems.  The goal of CSSD is to grow a forward looking capability in four primary technology areas to provide the essential elements required by tomorrow’s warfighter:  advanced communications systems, intelligent networks adapting to real-time environmental data, virtualized networks and sophisticated visualization capabilities that bring innovative cross disciplinary methods and techniques to the laboratory’s diverse information science portfolio.  Current efforts include projects in 5G testbeds and applications including network slicing, electronic warfare, geospatial visualization, mission planning and dynamic spectrum sensing and adaptation.

GTRI is searching for a proven leader and researcher with a Master’s Degree and 8+ years of experience in the technical areas of the division.  The successful candidate will also have demonstrated experience in contract development, program management, and personnel management.  The responsibilities of the associate division chief are split between the leadership of the division and actively performing research programs. 

The responsibilities of the Associate Division Chief are divided between leadership and independent research. It is expected that the leadership responsibilities of this position will be up to 50% time, with the other funding coming from externally funded research programs. The position is based at GTRI facilities in Midtown Atlanta, GA. Researchers at GTRI are research faculty at Georgia Tech.

The position is based in Atlanta on the Georgia Tech campus.  Travel is required in presenting research, developing business, meeting with customers, and demonstrating applied solutions.


Job Duties

The leadership duties include:

  • Working with the Division Chief to oversee a diverse technical workforce
  • Mentoring and developing future leaders
  • Personnel hiring, performance evaluations, staffing, etc.,
  • Management of budgets, resources, and space for the division,
  • Supporting development of strategic vision and execution plan for the division in conjunction with the Laboratory and Directorate Leadership,
  • Supporting contract development activities for the division and interfacing with external customers,
  • Supporting development of research collaborations between CSSD and other ICL divisions and GTRI laboratories.

Research duties include:

  • Program management of specific research projects,
  • Research activities supporting sponsored projects,
  • Development and execution of internal research and development programs supporting the division strategic vision,
  • Development of proposals for new research efforts.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computational Sciences and Engineering or a related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computational Sciences and Engineering or a related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computational Sciences and Engineering

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computational Sciences and Engineering or other related fields and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computational Sciences and Engineering or other related fields and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computational Sciences and Engineering or other related fields and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Consideration may be given to candidates without an advanced degree but have 12+ years of experience after the completion of a  Bachelors degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field of study.
  • 7+ years of experience in advanced communications systems, intelligent networks adaptation (e.g. spectral) to real-time environmental data, virtualized networks and sophisticated visualization capabilities,
  • Demonstrated recent performance in successful development of external customers, proposal development, and sponsor awards,
  • Demonstrated recent experience in leading research projects and managing researchers,
  • Demonstrated technical achievements in the research related to CSSD technical areas,
  • Excellent communication skills.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.


Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
