Bridge to the Faculty Postdoctoral Fellowship for Diverse Faculty Search Description:

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a Bridge to the FacultyPostdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). This position will begin on August 16, 2021.


Bridge to the Faculty Scholars Program is designed to recruit promising scholars with the goal of recruiting, mentoring and supporting their transition to a tenure-track junior faculty position. The position involves an initial two-year appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. A successful Postdoctoral Research Associate, with department approval, will have the opportunity to transition to a tenure-track faculty position starting in the 2023-2024 academic year. The Bridge to the Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate program seeks to advance diversity on the permanent faculty level by encouraging the recruitment, retention, and promotion of outstanding scholars from different backgrounds, with an emphasis on attracting individuals from groups who have been historically underrepresented in science.  The determined goal of this fellowship is to recruit, mentor, and support the transition of outstanding candidates from postdoctoral assignments to research-active, tenure-track faculty members. UIC strongly encourages applications from individuals who have demonstrated a background and/or record of scholarship. Given the extensive diversity of UIC’s student population, a successful applicant will demonstrate an understanding of barriers affecting populations traditionally underrepresented in the field of engineering and groups that are traditionally marginalized in the United States.

In addition to mentorship within ECE, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will participate in a cohort-based mentoring experience through the Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity, where they will have the opportunity to meet other Bridge to the Faculty Scholars. The Bridge to the Faculty Scholars Program is funded by the Chancellor’s Office and is administered through the Office of the Provost.


The ECE Department is looking for a dynamic Postdoctoral Research Associate in any area of electrical or computer engineering who will contribute to increase the visibility of the department through scholarly work published in high-impact journals and conferences, and help secure federal and/or industrial grants.

UIC seeks applicants whose creative work/research, teaching and service will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. The program is particularly interested in scholars with the potential to bring to their academic careers the critical perspective that comes from their non-traditional educational background or understanding of the experiences of groups historically underrepresented in higher education. The position is available in the Fall 2021 semester and the initial term of employment will be for 12 months.  Subject to satisfactory performance, and University approval, you may be re-appointed for one additional year. Successful postdocs in the Bridge to the Faculty program may have the opportunity to transition to tenure-track faculty at UIC starting in the 2023-2024 academic year.  Candidates must have received a Ph.D. in ECE or a closely related field no earlier than August 16, 2017 and no later than August 16, 2021.
