The Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator III, for Building Operations & HSSE at Texas A&M University at Qatar is responsible for lab safety program and providing environmental, health & safety (EHS) compliance oversight for the university.   • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to climb ladders and stairs

  • Must be able to work in mechanical/electrical rooms, fabrication shops, and laboratories

  • Position may involve frequent lifting or moving medium weight technical equipment, equipment cases/containers, and packages/containers

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related discipline

  • Five to ten years of related experience in environmental health and safety

  • Experience working in an institution of higher education

  • Experience working in an academic or industrial research environment providing Environmental Health and Safety support

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • CSP, CIH, CHMM, IOSH, or other nationally recognized certification

Responsibilities:

  • Safety Program - Provides guidance on and/or coordinates the selection, procurement, installation, and maintenance (in some instances) of safety equipment and/or personal protective equipment.  Coordinates and conducts safety trainings and briefings in the areas of hazard communication, chemical handling, laboratory safety, hazardous materials, shop safety, and other identified areas as appropriate. Assists with the development, coordination, and implementation of the Texas A&M University at Qatar accident investigation and prevention program. Assists with outreach activities intended to raise awareness of EHS related initiatives (i.e. Safety Week, elevator messages, etc.). Provides industrial hygiene support for issues such as indoor air quality, exposure monitoring and ventilation questions as needed. Maintains safety related records and provides applicable reports. Consults with building operations and facilities on building capabilities such as equipment specs, floor loading, ventilation, and exhaust needs to support university research activities. As needed, provides support to other departmental operations such as access control, security and export control. Is an active member of safety related committees (e.g. Laboratory Safety Committee, HVAP-HSE Subcommittee). Participates in emergency management activities/programs as the laboratory and research safety subject matter expert. Is an active member of the emergency response team. 

  • Laboratory Inspection Program - Builds and maintains laboratory inspection program criteria and procedures.  Conducts regular safety inspections of all laboratories (research and academic), hazardous areas (machine shops, chemical storage, etc.) and lab related equipment (e.g. chemical fume hoods).  Produces and maintains post inspection reports including summary of findings and any recommended follow up actions. Provides technical expertise to personnel to support Laboratory Safety Program.   

  • Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Policies, Procedures, and Laboratory Associated Documents - Assists in writing and updating EHS policies, procedures, and/or programs that correspond with Texas A&M University System, US, and International safety regulations and codes. Assists with execution, maintenance, and implementation of the objectives, measures, and requirements established in Texas A&M University at Qatar’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS). Assists in reviewing, writing, and/or developing standard operating procedures, project safety analysis (PSA), risk assessments, or similar safety related documents associated with research activities.  Assists in updating and maintaining the Texas A&M University at Qatar Laboratory Safety Manual. 

  • Chemical & Hazardous Waste Management - Ensures all areas storing and/or utilizing chemicals are maintaining and storing all materials properly and in accordance with regulations and university policies.  This program includes, but is not limited to, janitorial chemicals, compressed gases, machine shop chemicals, and research/academic laboratory chemicals. Assists in the development and implementation of a hazardous waste management program. Provides oversight of the chemical management program that involves chemical inventory control and proper storage practices as well as easily accessible SDS’s. Assists in providing management and oversight of a comprehensive hazardous materials shipping program involving receipt and shipment of various hazardous materials, in compliance with international shipping practices including IATA. Performs other duties as assigned.
