TO APPLY VISIT: Fisheries Simulation Modeling Ocean Associates Inc. is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to expand and apply a simulation model exploring the impact of climate change on regional fishery independent survey data and the subsequent use of such data in fishery stock assessments. The objectives of this work will be to 1) Develop software to generate survey observations of simulated marine species, 2) test the effects of changes in survey gear and spatiotemporal distribution shifts on perceived abundance and habitat use, and 3) evaluate methods to account for these changes, such as standardizing abundance indices to account for environmental covariates or directly incorporating environmental terms in assessment models. Tools to conduct such simulations exist, such as the R package MixFishSim. The successful candidate will take the lead with applying and expanding this package to simulated survey data for fish stocks assessed by the NEFSC and evaluate the use of these data in fishery stock assessment models. The successful candidate will work with a team of Population Dynamics researchers with experience and interest in this topic. The post-doctoral collaborator will also lead publication of peer-review articles on this research and present the work at scientific and stock assessment working group meetings. Duration This is 2-year research opportunity; second year of funds contingent on federal budget. Minimum Qualifications PhD in quantitative fisheries, statistics, applied mathematics, marine fisheries ecology, theoretical ecology, or a related field. Strong quantitative skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience in quantitative modeling, stock assessment, population dynamics, statistics, and computer programming (R, Template Model Builder, AD Model Builder) are preferred. The successful candidate will be motivated and capable of working independently and collaboratively.
