Laboratory Research Assistant - (210000IE)

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Medicine, Department of Pathology is currently recruiting for a Laboratory Research Assistant. Under supervision of the principal investigator and research associate, conducts a variety of routine experiments using molecular, cell biology and/or biochemistry techniques. Records test results, calculates, transcribes, and analyzes data using basic statistics.

  • Conducts routine tests following established procedures, which may include assays, DNA extraction, tissue culture, PCR analysis, electrophoresis, immunohistochemistry, etc.
  • Assists with analyzing PI with physiological structure of brain tumor specimens and identifying specific tissues.
  • Uses standard research equipment such as microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, centrifuges, etc.
  • Researches and collects basic study data through monitoring devices and maintains daily logs/basic records of methodologies and test results. With supervision, using databases, may summarize data and interpret results using descriptive statistics and basic hypothesis testing.
  • May write standard operating procedures for documentation and make informal presentations of these procedures to others in the lab.
  • Order laboratory supplies and prepare general lab solutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.

OTHER: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.

May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

Familiarity with basic laboratory instruments and equipment, computers (Microsoft office, spreadsheets, statistics) and scientific procedures. Basic knowledge and skills in general chemistry and biological experiments (making solutions, calculating dilutions, setting up experiments according to established protocols). Ability to read scientific literatures on biomedical related field and summarize findings when assigned.

HIRING RANGE: Low to mid-$40,000s; Commensurate with education and experience.
