What You Will Do
The successful applicant will work as an Engineering Technologist resource for the E-14, Test Engineering group. He/she will work with test engineers, systems engineers, and management to ensure successful preparation and execution of experimental activities.
The successful candidate will support component, subsystem, and system testing, including explosive experiment execution. The Engineering Technologist is responsible for supporting the preparation and execution of experimental activities, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing facility equipment, setting up instrumentation and data acquisition equipment, and other similar tasks. Specific test environments include but are not limited to shock, vibration, experimental modal analysis, and thermal conditioning.
Compliance with LANL and facility safety and security practices, and delivering accurate test results in a team effort are central to all testing efforts. Additional job responsibilities include participating in the development of new testing technologies and techniques and implementing quality assurance requirements.
Performance of job responsibilities will require working in controlled hazardous environments that may include high explosives, radioactive materials, radiation generating devices, and other hazardous materials.

Maintaining required safety and security training, assuring safety and security compliance, and making safety and security an integral part of every task.
Use and application of standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques within mechanical discipline to perform work.
Providing resolutions to an assortment of problems of moderately complex scope.
Assisting with engineering studies to formulate, determine and evaluate design criteria for structures, systems, and equipment.
Applying basic knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics and science to solve routine technical problems. Making simple calculations and performing basic analyses in support of engineering.
Assisting with product/system/equipment design, development and/or experimental evaluation processes.
Preparing, reviewing, and documenting technical information.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience in planning and executing tests involving components, preferably in shock and/or vibration environments.
Knowledge of data acquisition and signal conditioning systems to obtain data from various types of instrumentation such as accelerometers, strain gages, and thermocouples.
Experience with standard engineering software for data acquisition such as Mathcad, MATLAB, LabView or other similar software.
Demonstrated ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently as well as in a team environment.
Demonstrated experience in the testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems.
Experience working and delivering product on schedule, while being involved in multiple projects having various and sometimes changing priorities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated record of developing constructive, cooperative working relationships and working with teams to meet deliverables.
Education/Experience : Position typically requires Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
Knowledge of environmental testing activities including thermal, shock and vibration and mechanical testing.
Experience operating electrodynamic shakers, slip-tables and associated equipment (amplifiers, chillers, etc.), and thermal chambers.
Experience working in the vicinity of and handling classified or sensitive information.
Experience with operations involving innate hazards such as high explosives and radiological material.
Experience developing and implementing maintenance programs for experimental equipment.
Active DOE Q clearance

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.This position will be part of the Laboratory’s Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager’s discretion.Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Where You Will Work
The Engineering Technology and Design Division (E Division) is the premier engineering solution provider for national security challenges that include mechanical and thermal, process modeling and analysis, process and automation control, experimental device engineering and assembly, non-destructive testing and evaluation, and test engineering. The Division works in close cooperation with the several production facilities across the nuclear security complex as well as with the customers in the US Navy and Air Force. The Division is also tasked with broadly anticipating the scope of possible future modernizations and with enabling the various technology advances that they might require. Activities will include collaborations with the Weapon Systems Engineering Division (W) and Stockpile Modernization Division (Q). Projects vary widely from small weapon component and system level design, testing and computational simulation to experimental programs that require close integration and coordination with the US Navy and NNSA.
The Test Engineering Group (E-14) is responsible for the evaluation of experimental assets which includes project initiation, experimental design and analysis, hardware design and analysis, fabrication, experiment execution, and post-test analysis and reporting. Experimental activities range from small component-level tests up to full-scale integrated tests. Test activities will include collaborations across the Associate Lab Directorate for Weapons Engineering (ALD-W), LANL’s hydrodynamic test program, dynamic materials experimental programs, W/Q Division’s weapon system engineering groups, joint test operations with Sandia and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and supporting experiments performed at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).
