Job Summary

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded (NHLBI HL14878) position for laboratory research exploring the therapeutic use of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid in various acute lung injury models, such as in vitro models of protein permeability, inflammation and bacterial phagocytosis and in vivo mouse models of severe bacterial (E.coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa) pneumonia.  

Under direct supervision and guidance, the Staff Research Associate I will be expected to become proficient (with training) in basic molecular biology techniques such as RNA isolation, quantitative RT-PCR, Western Blot analyses, immunofluorescent and confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry.  The applicant will be taught how to isolate and characterize extracellular vesicles from human and mouse plasma and human and mouse bronchoalveolar lavage fluids.

Please note: This is a 100% one-time hire limited appointment for 18 months max, starting from the date of hire.


Department Description

UCSF’s Department of Anesthesia is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine (SOM) at UCSF.  The missions of the department include research (basic and clinical), teaching, patient care, and public service.  The department is organized across five sites.  The Department of Anesthesia provides anesthesia service for UCSF’s five integrated facilities: Moffitt/Long Hospital (pre-op, inpatient and outpatient), Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (inpatient and outpatient, including a very active trauma service), San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (inpatient and outpatient), Mission Bay Hospital (OB and Pediatric inpatient and outpatients), and the UCSF/Mt. Zion Medical Center (inpatient and outpatient, including a chronic pain management clinic).  

Authority and accountability for the department rest with the Department Chairman who directs the site Chiefs of Service and mission-based Vice Chairs. The department consist of 237 Faculty members, 171 Staff employees, 21 Fellows, 81 Residents, 15 Non-Faculty Academics, and 8 Post-Docs and 59 Certified Registered Nurse.  The department’s annual budget is $100 million.


Required Qualifications

•    BA/BS degree in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience


Preferred Qualifications

•    Some prior experience working in a basic science laboratory.  Some experience with basic molecular biology techniques
