Department/Program Description: The Stanford Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) is a multi-disciplinary facility where musicians and researchers work together using computer-based technology both as an artistic medium and as a research tool. Areas of interest span composition and improvisation, performance, hardware and software development, synthesis and analysis, physical modeling algorithms, digital signal processing, interface and instrument design, virtual reality, laptop orchestra, psychoacoustics and musical acoustics, music cognition and brain science, perceptual audio coding, music information retrieval, audio networking, data sonification, and many others.

CCRMA’s diverse community consists of administrative and technical staff, faculty, research associates, graduate research assistants, graduate and undergraduate students, visiting scholars, visiting researchers and composers, and industrial associates. University departments represented at CCRMA include Music, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Art, Theater, Communications, Psychology, and Medical School departments. The Center offers studies leading to bachelor, masters and doctoral degrees with a full slate of academic courses, seminars, special interest group meetings, summer workshops and colloquia. Concerts of computer music are presented throughout the year.  CCRMA maintains a variety of Linux-powered in-house servers (web, email, file, version control, jacktrip…) as well as around 40 user-facing audio-optimized desktop workstations (predominantly Linux plus a few Macintosh); within CCRMA’s wide anarchic heterogeneity of tools and systems for teaching and research there is a significant tradition of free, libre, and open-source software.

Position Summary: CCRMA is seeking a Systems Administrator. The Systems Administrator will work under general supervision of the Academic Technology Specialist to install, configure, document, optimize, and maintain integrity of servers and the desktop audio/video environment at CCRMA. This includes building and installing hardware and performing upgrades for servers and workstations, as well as providing consultation, advice, and training for CCRMA's diverse community of artists and researchers. The successful candidate will be able to learn from example; understand, question, and critique existing and proposed methods; imagine and reimagine boldly; experiment freely; test carefully; and upgrade supported facilities cautiously and frequently.  Attention to detail, interest in understanding why something does or doesn’t work, and self-initiative within teamwork are essential. Communication should be accurate, detailed, pertinent, timely, and respectful. Applicants should have a strong intuitive grasp of digital and analog audio concepts and systems. In this role, you will:

  • Build, install, configure, analyze, tune, and troubleshoot operating systems to achieve optimum performance levels.
  • Resolve difficult system problems and provide consultation or training.
  • Configure and assist in the design of system and network security.
  • Manage hardware, software, and utilities for installation, modification, troubleshooting, maintenance, and upgrades of operating systems and workstation environments.
  • Monitor and analyze resource usage to recommend/develop enhancements to system capabilities and performance.
  • Compare, evaluate, and implement new technologies, and integrate systems into the computing environment.
  • Document systems infrastructure for users, support and consulting personnel, and developers.
  • May train students, temporary employees, and/or staff who provide support.
  • Act as liaison with various departments across campus.
  • May facilitate vendor relationships (e.g., research external vendors, analyze technical services and pricing, contact and consultation as necessary).

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with multiple types of operating systems or expert knowledge in one.
  • Experience with managing an integrated computing environment.
  • Extensive experience in multiple programming languages for system development.
  • Experience with networked environments.
  • Experience with network storage solutions.
  • Experience with configuring and maintaining routers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security protocols.
  • Ability to manage shared resources and perform moderately complex tasks.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to train to others in applications and operating system fundamentals.
  • Experience with middleware and infrastructure.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21>40 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exposed to high voltage electricity, noise >80dB TWA, confined spaces, hot temperatures, heavy metals.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Experience in computer music programming languages such as ChucK, Max/MSP, SuperCollider, and/or Pure Data
  • Linux expertise, experience with Linux on ARM on small single board computers
  • Experience using and configuring macOS, and familiarity with Windows and portable platforms (iOS and Android)
  • Strong commitment to equity, accessibility, and inclusion
  • Experience in facilitating access for users with varying skills sets and/or previous experience
  • Participation in free software projects and communities
  • Active in the electronic music field (performer, composer, sound artist) preferred
