The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is hiring a User Experience/User Interface Designer/Analyst to serve as the user perspective expert for Lab and IT initiatives. The purpose of this job role is to gather and assess user-centered data, present findings to teams, and provide recommendations for the improvement of services and user experience. The successful candidate will engage with users to identify behaviors and pain points, provide UX/UI consultation services for various teams, and deliver user-friendly products and services with high functionality and usability.


The User Experience/User Interface Designer/Analyst collaborates with ITSD, stakeholders and end users of technology across ORNL. This position will report to the Portfolio Management Group Leader.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:


Specific responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:


Digital Transformation Teamwork:

  • Use Scrum Agile principles and framework, working with team of developers, product owners, project managers, enterprise architects, and other IT professionals
  • Serve as the primary consultant for design recommendations and other UI/UX related decisions
  • Conduct user-centered research including literature reviews, surveys, interviews, heuristic evaluations, and focus groups
  • Translate user feedback into helpful recommendations for design of services
  • Present findings to the team, stakeholders, and field questions related to user feedback
  • Defend design recommendations based on user feedback and knowledge of human cognition
  • Design wireframes and prototypes with high usability and visual appeal



  • Work with cross-functional teams to optimize communications in ITSD and across the Lab
  • Provide consultation services for a variety of projects including transforming the end user experience, redesign of cybersecurity and other ITSD materials and the ITSD website
  • Develop personas and user stories to inform design choices
  • Provide evidence-based feedback on designs to team
  • Defend design recommendations based on user feedback and knowledge of human cognition


Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify ways to improve ITSD products and services based on current research
  • Actively seek and review educational materials regarding developments in the field of UI/UX
  • Participate in training and continuing education courses to stay up-to-date on best practices, current trends, and forecasts within the field of UI/UX

  • Bachelor’s degree in information science, computer science, computer engineering, or related field of study, with two years of experience. 
  • Knowledge and experience with basic UI/UX principles and guidelines, especially regarding Design Thinking
  • Knowledge of the relationship between human cognition, design, and user experience
  • Experience with user-centered research methodologies including surveys and interviews
  • Commitment to keeping current on UI/UX research and best practices
  • Clear verbal, written and presentation communication skills, ability to pick up on nonverbal cues
  • Excellent attention to detail, especially with visual designs
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion with special awareness of how user demographics impact user experience
  • Ability to work with diverse stakeholders and cross-functional teams
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, excellent time management skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in information science, computer science, computer engineering or related field of study. 
  • Experience working with wireframing and prototyping tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, LucidSpark, LucidChart, Invision, Balsamiq, Miro, Mural, etc.
  • Experience conducting high-level user research such as heuristic evaluations, screen recording-based studies, and eye-tracking-based studies
  • Knowledge of storyboarding process and tools
  • Ability to walk individuals through a given process in order to observe and communicate user experience
  • Knowledge of Agile principles, Scrum framework and Kanban methodologies
  • Strong technical reading and writing skills
  • Experience with Office365, ServiceNow, Google Chrome
  • Experience working in a government, research or academic setting with cybersecurity requirements
  • Portfolio of sample designs and projects
