Web Developer/Designer - Tickle College of Engineering

The Office of Engineering Communications within the Tickle College of Engineering seeks to hire a web developer and/or designer. This position will work collaboratively as part of a team of communications professionals to design and implement digital design, content strategy, digital marketing, and data analytics.

  • Oversee the implementation of the university's web standards and branding to all web applications and webpages as specified at http://brand.utk.edu .
  • Leads the development, programming, and support of website projects associated with the college’s digital media initiatives
  • Meet with college’s constituents to discuss and provide guidance for new web projects.
  • Provide ongoing upgrades, enhancements, security patches, and bug fixes to web applications and services
  • Develop and maintain web themes for WordPress while ensuring websites are responsive and perform in a user-centered manner
  • Provides training to college constituents on proper use of WordPress and web best practices
  • Assists in creation of smart email marketing templates for college departments and administrative units
  • Implement methods to improve search engine relevance
  • Implementation of digital marketing programmatic elements including Google Tag management, tracking pixels, and retargeting
  • Identify, research, and recommend best practices for optimization technologies, techniques, and strategies and improvements to accessibility.
  • Create occasional graphics for social media and website posts
  • Complete professional development opportunities in order to keep knowledge and skills up-to-date.



Minimum Requirements and Experience:

  • Associate’s degree in a related field (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience)
  • At least two years of professional experience directly related to duties and responsibilities specified
  • Advanced knowledge of HTML, CSS, and other web languages, particularly PHP and JavaScript
  • Knowledge of web standards, including web accessibility standards
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Specifically, Photoshop and Illustrator)
  • Demonstrated experience creating, executing, and evaluating email marketing campaigns
  • Demonstrated experience using and interpreting Google Analytics or equivalent for reporting on metrics for content strategy
  • Knowledge of/prior application of digital management and digital marketing and content management and SEO best practices
  • Knowledge of UX/UI best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain, patch, and upgrade CMS environments (WordPress preferred)
  • Familiarity with working within brand guidelines and requirements.
  • Familiarity with working within and helping to develop digital content strategy for multiple audiences.
  • Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to interact with and collaborate with all staff in a respectful and sensitive manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to problem solve and analyze complex problems
  • Ability to learn new skills and technologies as needed
  • Ability to handle rolling project delivery deadlines on time in an often-fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at one time

Preferred Abilities and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Four years of professional experience directly related to website development
  • Programming skills in languages such as PHP, MySQL, JavaScript (server-side)
  • Familiarity with editing copy for the digital environment
  • Familiarity with Adobe Premiere or equivalent video editing software
  • Design background, ability to create graphics for use in digital environment
  • WordPress plugin and theme development skills
  • Google Tag Manager experience
  • Experience working within an academic environment (1+ years preferred)
  • Understanding of social media best practices to drive engagement
  • Familiarity with editing video content with footage, graphics, and music
