Position Details:

Summary of Duties:

The Director of Events and Donor Relations will develop the strategy for, and oversee the planning and execution of special events designed to support engagement, stewardship and fundraising initiatives, including those in support of Washington State University’s (WSU) comprehensive campaign.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Philanthropic Engagement and Campaign Communications, and collaborating across WSU Advancement leadership, the incumbent will provide strategic event conceptualization, foundation-level and institutional advise, leadership, and execution for WSU Foundation (WSUF) events as well as constituency-based programs as needed. This includes annual Board of Directors and WSUF Advocates meetings and retreats, regional events, as well as potentially events overseas. The incumbent will ensure that all events and meetings advance development strategies and other organizational objectives. As such, the Director will establish guidelines and protocols for events across the University.

In addition, this individual will be responsible for conceiving, developing and presenting programs, recognition strategies, and stewardship and donor relations initiatives with the goal of nurturing positive relationships with WSU donors and volunteers. These events will include recognition and stewardship events.

Travel, evening, and weekend work is occasionally required.


Required Qualifications:

Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a related field which has included at least two (2) years of management experience. A Master’s degree in a relevant field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Additional Requirements:

  • Experience conceptualizing and executing complex events.

  • Experience developing and formalizing processes and procedures.

  • Highly developed project management skills.

  • Strong organizational abilities.

  • Attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple and varied tasks independently, while also working collaboratively.

  • Experience forecasting and managing a budget.

  • Experience engaging and managing independent consultants and outside vendors.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills, with the ability to listen and communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to engage and influence people, using tact and diplomacy, and maintaining a high level of confidentiality.

  • Superior customer service skills.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and some weekends.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing events in a higher education and/or university Advancement unit is highly desirable

  • Experience managing donor recognition or donor engagement teams in a higher education and/or university Advancement setting is highly desirable.

  • Ability to establish positive, productive working relationships with donors.

  • Evidence of creative, conceptual thinking and the ability to take the conceptual and make it a reality.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
