We are ​seeking candidates for a researcher position to work at the Center for Petroleum Studies (CEPETRO ) and at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (RECOD ) Lab. at the Institute of Computing - IC ​, University of Campinas, Unicamp , Campinas, SP, Brazil.

The position is part of a partnership between the university and private companies in the oil and gas field. The project aims at designing, developing and combining new machine learning techniques to support the pre-salt production fields. The envisioned background of the candidate is in ​Petroleum Engineering or related fields​. The project ends in August 2023.

In the project, we focus on heterogeneous data from oil and gas production to find flaws and to improve wells, reservoir and facility management and reaching better recovery factors. One branch of the project shall investigate and understand the data gathered from a set of sensors and different sources and thus establishing relationships with reservoir lifetime phases. Another branch of research focuses on seeking a transformed and unified feature space (manifold), allowing machine learning techniques to highlight relevant information from heterogeneous sources. The goal is not only to pinpoint abnormal behavior but also to support the solution identification and to explore unseen opportunities for production improvements.

The Position

Petroleum Engineering responsible for research and technical support in the project entitled "Machine-Learning development for Analysis of Complex Production data in a Pre-Salt carbonate field". Supervise the postdoc research lines, supporting and integrating the petroleum and the computational groups of the project. The candidate will be responsible for creating and evaluating dynamic reservoir model data (such as the UNISIM-II benchmark) and make the data helpful in applying Machine Learning techniques. Hands-on contribution with hybrid / joint approaches, combining physics-driven models (reservoir simulation models) and data-driven techniques. Interact and contribute with the computational team proposing innovative methodologies aligning AI strategies applied in Petroleum data. Write technical reports and present them to the group and stakeholders.

The key aspects we look for are:

  • Solid background in the Oil and Gas field;
  • Solid skills in CMG software, mainly GEM;
  • Knowledge in Machine Learning techniques and fundamentals;
  • Solid skills in statistics and evaluation;
  • The vacancy is full-time and requires fluency in English (writing, reading, listening).
