The Department of Accounting and Finance of the University of Cyprus invites applications for up to two (2) full time Research Associate (Special Scientist) positions for the needs of an Internal Research Program in behavioral accounting and finance. The program, titled CEO Personality Traits, Analyst Optimism and Firm Performance, aims to profile the narcissistic and overconfident personalities of all S&P 500 CEOs using textual analysis and analyze its impact on financial analyst behavior and firm performance. Candidates with a strong Masters or a PhD (post-doc) in related fields such as Finance, Accounting or Economics and Statistics will be given preference. Candidates with a strong Masters but without a PhD, will have the opportunity and be encouraged to enroll at the Department's PhD program in accounting and finance.


The employment contract will be for a period of up to one year (6-month minimum), with option to extend up to two years for the specific research project. For those who will be admitted to the PhD program, renewal can extend until the completion of the PhD studies, based on satisfactory performance. 

The monthly salary is set to a gross amount of €1,000. Employee contributions to the various Governmental Funds will be deducted from this amount. There is no provision for 13th salary.

For those who will be enrolled in the PhD program, all tuition fees will also be covered as well as expenses to participate in international conferences of up to €1,000 per year. Candidates that will be enrolled in the PhD program will have to meet the qualifications for admission to the Department’s PhD program in Finance and/or Accounting

The University of Cyprus is a young research-based University. The Accounting and Finance department ranks among the top 50 in Europe and top 200 globally with respect to financial research output. Cyprus, a sovereign island in the Mediterranean sea with sun all year round, is a member country of the European Union and part of the Euro zone. The cost of living in Cyprus is quite low compared to other EU capitals while its tax system is progressive with the first €19500 of annual income being tax free.


  • MSc degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics & Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering or in any other related field (must have the MSc degree at hand or before June 30th , 2021).
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Very good knowledge and applied use of statistical/econometric methods and programming (e.g., SAS, SPSS, STATA, EViews, R, Matlab, Python, C++) and related software.
  • Knowledge and experience in data extraction, cleaning and analysis using financial databases such as Compustat and CRSP, and especially textual analysis software will be a considerable advantage. 


The selected candidates will be under the supervision of Prof. Lenos Trigeorgis and Irene Karamanou and will be expected to have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducting the research/actions required by the program.
  • Preparing required program-related paper drafts and research reports.
  • Any other relevant work that the Program Coordinators assign to the Special Scientist
