The Department of Computing and the Faculty of Medicine at University of Turku, Finland are jointly looking for 1 - 4 Doctoral Candidates / Project Researchers for a fixed-term position. The Doctoral candidate / Project researcher will work on Business Finland funded "PRIVASA privacy-preserving AI for synthetic and anonymous health data" project and/or the Finnish Academy funded Health Campus Turku (HCT) 2.0 -project. All positions are fixed term starting as soon as possible. PRIVASA project ends 31.12.2023, and HCT 2.0 31.12.2022, which means the length of the employment depends on the project to which the doctoral candidate/project researcher has been selected. The positions are full-time, although part-time work is possible on mutual agreement.
The main task of the researcher will be to develop and validate methods for privacy preserving machine learning. These include machine learning methods that can generate synthetic data that is anonymous yet resembles real-world patient data, as well as other complimentary methods that allow maintaining the privacy of data used for machine learning based analytics. At the department of computing the work is jointly coordinated by the Digital Health Technology group and the Algorithmics and Computational Intelligence laboratory. The work will be done in cooperation with an interdisciplinary research group including expertise in legal and ethical matters, representatives from health data sector such as the AURIA Clinical Informatics, other academic partners (Turku AMK and VTT) and companies participating in PRIVASA.
The applicant is expected to have a MSc degree or equivalent from a relevant field such as computer science, ICT, statistics or mathematics. The work requires expertise in machine learning based data analytics, including the capability to implement data analytics workflows and algorithms using the Python programming language, as well as ability to cooperate with a multidisciplinary research team. Any previous experience in working with health data such as patient records or biomedical imaging data is an advantage. We are looking to hire a group of researchers with complementary skills, such as machine learning software development, mathematics and statistics, medical data analysis, or deep learning, and individual responsibilities can be tailored according to the strengths and interests of the hired applicants.

The degree must be completed by the end of the application period. A doctoral candidate must also have an accepted research plan. In addition, when acquiring his or her degree or otherwise, he or she is required to have demonstrated the ability and motivation to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan.
The salary will be based on levels 2-4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research staff in the salary system applied at Finnish universities, according to which the base salary for the position is 2055,66–2563,09 € per month. In addition, a performance-based salary component of min 6% and max 50 % will be paid.
A six (6) month trial period applies to the positions.
