OFFER DESCRIPTION

Accretion process in interacting binary stars and active galactic nuclei generates variable electromagnetic radiation. This variability is a stochastic process best described by red noise with superimposed quasi-periodic oscillations. Characteristic frequencies of the latter represent the underlying physical process generating the radiation. A similar oscillating character can be seen in materials surface after ion-irradiation. The goal is to study such variability in satellite data and microscopy. The aim is to design a way to search for characteristic frequencies by standard methods for time series analysis, but also to simulate data for quantitative evaluation of reliability. The efficiency of this process can be increased by using machine learning. The astrophysical part of the topic is focused more on getting acquainted with the methods. The final subject of the study are nanostructures on the surface of the material after ion irradiation. The student will use "knowledge transfer" and propose a method for quantitative analysis of microscopic images in order to measure characteristic dimensions of the nanostructures.

    Physics: Master Degree or equivalent
    Astronomy: Master Degree or equivalent

Skills/Qualifications

Good skills in programming, numerical methods and basics of AI are required, good background in materials science, physics, astrophysics and mathematics is welcome.


Specific Requirements

 Good command of at least one of the languages is essential: English, Slovak, Czech.
